Updating the Old Stairwell

Alix had decided that she wanted a fresh look for the entryway of her home. The old brown woodwork was tired and had started to come loose. She heard about us through a friend and call us out to take a look.

When we showed up, Alix was armed with a clipping from a magazine. “I want something like that,” she said. It was a picture of a stairwell done in natural pine trim and stainless steel cable railing. The lines were clean and it had a much more open feeling than the existing railing.

It was from these humble beginnings that a plan began to take shape. First, we tore out the old stairwell. Then, to determine exactly how we wanted the railing to look, we created a detailed prototype. Once Alix gave the final approval, we were ready to charge ahead.

Alix was gracious enough to let us take over her garage. That was especially necessary considering that it was February!

Each post had to be individually sanded and finished based on the grain and knots in the pine wood. We drilled our holes in the posts using a custom jig capable of getting the angle just right.

The bases of the post were also cut to fit the slope of the stairs. We even had to get out the old fashioned hand saw to complete these cuts!

As the project came together, it became obvious that the new trim on the stairs was going to need matching trim on the adjacent doorways. Once we were all complete, the entire entryway had a modern makeover. Take a look for yourself!

Alix loved the new look, and we did too. Let us know if you need an help with your next project. And God bless!
